Rules of the Road
The sidewalks are populated with people and these on-foot travelers cause pedestrian traffic. The reason why cars and pedestrian traffic is separate is for accident prevention. The rules of the road prohibit pedestrian traffic from mixing with vehicular traffic not only for accident prevention, but to allow traffic to flow without stopping. Crosswalks, curbs, streetlights and laser line striping are all put in place to support the rules of the road. Here is how laser line striping affects the rules of the road:
- Solid double yellow lines allow traffic to flow in two directions simultaneously.
- One solid line next to a broken yellow line allows one side of traffic to merge into the next.
- The HOV lane is the carpool lane with a diamond on it in laser line striping.
- A single broken line in laser line striping is for accident prevention and it allows you to change lanes safely.
- A single solid line allows you to change lanes but only if it is absolutely necessary.
