Rules of the Road

The sidewalks are populated with people and these on-foot travelers cause pedestrian traffic. The reason why cars and pedestrian traffic is separate is for accident prevention. The rules of the road prohibit pedestrian traffic from mixing with vehicular traffic not only for accident prevention, but to allow traffic to flow without stopping. Crosswalks, curbs, streetlights and laser line striping are all put in place to support the rules of the road. Here is how laser line striping affects the rules of the road:

  • Solid double yellow lines allow traffic to flow in two directions simultaneously.
  • One solid line next to a broken yellow line allows one side of traffic to merge into the next.
  • The HOV lane is the carpool lane with a diamond on it in laser line striping.
  • A single broken line in laser line striping is for accident prevention and it allows you to change lanes safely.
  • A single solid line allows you to change lanes but only if it is absolutely necessary.

The rules of the road prohibit us from ignoring the laser line striping and they are even included in motor vehicle testing. Each state has different guidelines for obtaining a license but if you are unaware of these restrictions study the manual.

The Bike Lane

For accident prevention laser line striping was implemented on the side of the road and it was named the bike lane. For years there had been a problem with mixing pedestrian traffic, vehicular traffic and cyclists. Pedestrians were being clipped by bicyclists and bicyclists weren’t able to avoid pedestrians fast enough, so something had to be done. When bicyclists migrated to the open streets, many cyclists were injured and some were fatally wounded. The bike lane was instituted to relieve this stress from regulators and for accident prevention. Laser line striping separates the bike lane from the rest of the road with a bicycle symbol and bold lines.
